Due to increasing water scarcity and dependence on artificial cultivation methods, many Indian farmers are reaching the limits of their knowledge of proper soil management and their financial resilience. Artificial cultivation methods, such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and hybrid seeds, have left them so deeply indebted that they resort to suicide.
To break this vicious cycle, we are trying to combat the dependence on artificial cultivation methods, as the annual reliance on highly sensitive hybrid seeds is threatening the financial independence of many smallholder farmers.
A sustainable solution is the reintroduction of organic farming methods. Therefore, on our model farm at our partner organization in India, only natural seeds, which are more resilient and reusable, are used. We also use home-made organic fertilizer. Through this example, the farmers see the benefits of returning to organic farming methods, which are based on environmental concerns and their own financial independence. This connects agricultural sustainability with the needs of smallholder farmers, and they learn how to use organic farming methods firsthand.
